Let’s face it — SUP racing is a blast, not only because of the great people in the standup paddling community, but also because it’s challenging. Sometimes the smallest details in your training routines can be the difference between edging out your training buddy or watching said buddy kick sand in your face at the finish line. Check out these tips from one of the best paddlers in the world.
Key Points in This Video
- Move your feet. Note: Practice moving around on the board, crossstepping, adjusting your stance. The more you move in practice, the better equipped you’ll be to handle all types of race conditions and situations. We like to tell our paddlers to move around till they fall — because if you’re not falling in, you’re not getting better.
- Learn to brace. Bracing is a critical racing skill that will keep you on top of your board, rather than beside it. Practice intentionally, and push the limits till you fall.
- Practice your race starts. Practice all types of starts: beach starts, shoreline start, water starts, sitting starts, etc… Practicing start is a lot of fun and can be the difference between a great race and a washing machine simulation. Washing machines aren’t fun to paddle in, so get a good start.
