Stance Transition Drills

Check out this drill at 2:21 into the video.

Every once in a while we find a video that is just too good not to share. This is one of those videos.

Learning to move on the board is an important skill, and this drills described and demonstrated by Anthony Vela helps you become more adept at staying on and handling your board. It’s very simple, and will help you in buoy turns, popping over surf, surfing…

  1. Start by paddling at a moderate pace. When you have good momentum, smoothly and slowly step one foot back to your surf stance.
  2. Once you’re good and stable, transition back to your parallel stance. Being smooth is more important than being fast here.

Once you’re comfortable with this setup, you can start to vary the drill a little. You can take two steps back. You can weight the back foot more heavily. You can incorporate a turn. You can pick up the pace. But remember, the point of a drill is to master a skill, so master the basic version first before adding variations.
